As it proudly proclaims in the beginning, Tangled is the 50th animated film from the Disney studios. It’s the studio’s version of the fairy tale of Rapunzel, as in “Rapunzel! Rapunzel! Let down your hair!” After nearly ten years of development, the film’s here, and so is my assessment.
When she was born, Rapunzel (Mandy Moore) inherited the magical powers of the flower her mother, the Queen, ingested during childbirth. The evil witch Gothel (Donna Murphy) steals her away and locks her in a tower, planning to keep the “flower” for herself. Like any good Disney heroine, Rapunzel wants out.
Along comes Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi), notorious thief, who decides to hide in her tower after swiping the royal crown. Rapunzel decides to use him and the crown to get out of the tower and see the world. Now, only if Gothel doesn’t find out will everything goes smoothly.
Perhaps the first thing one’ll pay attention to in a Disney film is the music. Here, the music is by frequent Disney composer Alan Menken and lyrics are by Glenn Slater. Their songs are average at best, but not terrible at all. Menken’s background music, however, suits the film quite nicely.
Another thing going for the film is the characters. Flynn gets some of the best laughs, while Rapunzel makes for the perfect damsel NOT in distress and Gothel is quite an effective villain. Pascal, Rapunzel’s pet chameleon and Maximus the horse and Flynn’s arch-enemy, are great supporting animals.
As for whether you should see this in 3d or flat screen, I leave the choice to you, the reader. But this latest Disney fairy tale, possibly the last due to management decree, is quite worth it.
